Before Midnight: Each One Reach One; Each One Teach One

iranian modern art
BBC – In pictures: Iranian art in the US
I am not sure of the origin of that saying, but I think most children of color (of my generation, anyway) had that instilled in them from early on. For some reason I’ve been thinking of that a lot, lately.
I know even less about Iran than other places I know little about, but this election promises to be interesting. One of the newscasts had a sort of breakdown of each candidates core supporters. The challenger, mainly students and the elite and well off. The incumbent, primarily the working class and poor, who are reportedly starting to make bigger strides under his administration, with government help.
This, of course, gives me pause – Ahmadinejad is no simple study; he reportedly says some wacky stuff, but that, of course, is not the totality of the picture. In the West we really only hear about him when he says something outrageous or does something that in some way affects the US or Israelis, so we (or at least the we who pay little attention) have a somewhat skewed view of him and of the country, I think.
It’s been in the low 80′s here for the past few days and is supposed to continue that pattern for the next week. Lovely, lovely California weather, especially since normally by this time of year we are at least in the 90′s, if not the 100′s. I think some of us, though, while are enjoying the cooless while still wondering when the other shoe will drop – will be be punished for this respite with brutal temps for the next few months, as has happened in the past?
Obama’s barely been in office 6 months and already the right wing (and the far, violent, right) are flipping their lids.
I went looking for a sample of modern Iranian art to put at the top (need to branch out a little) but had a harder time than I thought finding something. Lots of stuff from way back when, though – which is understandable, some of it is really great. It occurs to me, though, that sometimes we might tend to think of Iranians as many do the Native Americans… something that existed in the past and that has no bearing on the present and is unrelated to any who would in this day and age be termed Iranian or Native American.
I’m too tired to flesh that out, I’m afraid. Maybe another day, but no promises.
