What They Said II
Despite my crabbing about quotations, I quite like them sometimes. Some, in my view, are insipid and unimaginative but what does that matter? If others find joy or inspiration or humor in them, then it’s all good. It’s not really what the words say but what application they may have to your life at that point in time that causes them to resonate, no doubt.
Take the Harrison Ford quote I had up for June - “The Force is within you. Force yourself”. I can’t recall if I came across the quote first, and then decided on my project to write something, anything, every day or if I found the quote to fit my already planned goal. Either way, it worked out. I didn’t read it daily or anything, but sometimes, at the end of the day when I was just tired and achy and wanting nothing more than to go to bed, I thought of it and instead dragged myself over to the computer and spouted off. Good stuff? Nah. But at least it was something, when so often otherwise it would be nothing at all.
I’m not going to repeat that project again (for a while, anyway) but I find I like the idea of having one quote for an entire month and, if not exactly basing posts off it, at least using it as a springboard from time to time. I’ve already found my quote for next month, from Barbara Grizzuti Harrison:
“Fantasies are more than substitutes for unpleasant reality; they are also dress rehearsals, plans. All acts performed in the world begin in the imagination.”
I love that, it meshes so well with my own thoughts, but I’ve never heard of Ms. Harrison before. I did a quick check of her Wikipedia page, but they don’t tell any of the stuff I’m interested in, such as… is/was this person (any of the people whose words I use, not just Harrison’s) homophobic? transphobic? racist? etc? That they are/were to some extent would not necessarily mean I would not use their quoted statements but I would at least post an acknowledgment of any problematic issues.
Anyway, that’s my plan, pretty much. I haven’t yet figured out where I am going with this site, if anywhere, but I think that will come as I become more comfortable having a personal space and revealing my thoughts to the world (or the two people who read my site part of it, at least) that it’ll just sort of naturally evolve.
I’m finding it kinda fun to be, in effect, just hopping in the car and driving, no destination in mind.
