So, my book is set in the Antebellum South – Tennessee and Louisiana, particularly, and deals with slavery and other things going on – and, of course, I know little or nothing (beyond the basics) about any of it. Thus, the lots and lots of research before I even begin.
It’s amazing how many questions you can come up with about this period of time, when you really think about it.
I was finally able to get a few free minutes online today so I’ve ordered a few books into my local library as a start – some about the lives of people in general, when they were held in captivity, and a couple about women (although my protagonist is a man, as I’m basing it loosely on my GG granduncle’s life) and one about the songs and um… something else, I forget, but it sounds very interesting.
Anyway, we’ll see. My life is going through one of its huge mood swings right now so, since I can get little writing (of anything) time in, gathering all the research seems like the next best thing.
