I know “tee hee” is inappropriate here, and yet I can’t much help myself…

I’ve had a dislike of Whole Foods for my own reasons for a while – partly from exorbitant prices, partly from not really buying the whole “it’s all so clean and green and healthy and community-friendly” stuff, partly from having heard that they edged out actual good markets in the same way WalMart runs smaller stores out of business…so I sat in judgement of people who LOOOOOOVVVVEEED Whole Foods, already. And then the wording of your post, well…pleased me, to say the least.

hah. “tee hee” is entirely appropriate! I admit, I was laughing a bit myself at all the angst, mainly because I’ve never really liked Whole Foods either, for some of the reasons you mention. Not that I’ve had much experience with it, mind you… too rich for my pocketbook, that’s for sure.

    Seconded/thirded!

A bunch of years ago I had a student who worked for Whole Paycheck, and what he told me about how they treated their employees (think: Fascist state) only added to my existing resentment at their markups and marketing. I was glad to see the underpinnings exposed – but now there’s some kind of movement afoot to boycott until the Whole Foods board dumps Mackee, and I’m just sighing. Mackee the individual is vile, sure, but so is the whole healthy-food-is-for-rich-people bit, which won’t change if he’s ousted.

    Feh.

    Theriomorph! *waves wildly*

I hope all is well with you? I have just discovered your new site and have been peeking in from time to time. I quite like it.

And yep, the entire concept of Whole Foods has never really sat right with me. Mind you, I’ve not done a study into their business practices or model, but there seems to be some sort of attempt to equate (in some minds) the eating of healthy, organically grown, expensive and limited foods (yourself) with being liberal and progressive. As if, it appears to imply, the very act of purchasing these things – even if the vast majority can’t afford them – strikes a blow against… well, I don’t even know who. But someone or something bad!

Or, maybe WF does use a portion of each purchase to provide healthy, nutritious food to lower income people or something and I’ve just never heard of that part of their business.
