Ah, Whitney
If she makes it to the top again, or even close, it’ll likely be on the wings of those who remember before and who love her, fans and whoever else. Because, it seemed to me, listening to her this morning on Good Morning America, that the voice… well. It’s no longer a Voice. I guess because of the drug use. (What drugs can do that to vocal cords, anyway?)

She, it appeared to me, relied heavily on the backup singers when it came to some notes and mostly just pranced around the stage clapping and interacting with the crowd. They seemed to love it, and her, and in fact it may have sounded completely different in person. (Apparently she says her trouble hitting notes was due to the long interview she recorded with Oprah. Hope so.)
I feel sad for her but I admit to also feeling a sort of an illogical resentment (just a little bit!) against Whitney Houston. And Michael Jackson and a few other black or other non-white folks who have taken their prodigious talents, access and reputations and just… squandered them. Most folks (of any color) never even get to cast a shadow across the door, let alone have all of them open for them. Grrr.
Didn’t they almost have it all, indeed.
