Serenity… refocus – seek joy – thrive

springpad – an organizer for my organizers?

No sooner had I declared my need for something, anything, to organize my life (which is very disorganized due to all my organizers – well, and the fact that I’m just a tad scatterbrained, but still… ), when Jeff Janer, co-founder of Springpad, dropped into my comments to offer a solution!

Maybe.

As you can see (if you click the link) Springpad is a highly flexible online organizer, notebook, search engine (kinda – there are apps for searching for books, or businesses, or restaurants and all sorts of things) and it’s really fun to play with once you get the hang of it.

But will it work for what I need it to do? That’s the question! And it’s one I plan to answer this week, as I use Springpad (just about) exclusively for the things I need to do this week. It has a web bookmarklet which will allow me to capture photos and text, as well as video files, Jeff says, which I need to do from time to time. Also, I *think* you can set alerts for tasks and such, but I still have to investigate that.

One thing that occurred to me last night, that I could really use this for is the whole financial aid/scholarships and stuff thing. I am old and just not coordinated enough to remember what to submit when, and how and all that. If I can figure out how to capture (or “spring”) the scholarship/grant information as I come across it, and at the same time set a timer thing to alert me close to when it is due, and then just forget about it till then, I will love them forever, I think.

Anyway, I pass no judgments yet. Well, I do – I would already recommend it to anyone who needs just a general online organizer, that is really customizable. But I will see if it is useful enough to me to replace at least a couple of my other organizers and report back on that. So, I’ll use it this week, and probably post random complaints (I always have them, is this not so? I have some now! but I am refraining. After all, we just met.) and suggestions through the week and then do a write-up next weekend of my experiences.

Hopefully in a more organized, professional manner and not just random free thought, etc ;)

Nanette – Thanks for trying out Springpad!

When you add Tasks or Events you can set reminders to be emailed or texted to your phone :)

Feel free to contact me if you need help or have questions. Also, we see “complaints” as opportunities for improvement, so please send those my way as well :)

    Hi Devin!

Thanks for stopping by, and your offer. Sorry it’s taken me so long to answer your comment – I’ve sort of socked in with the flu or something and I would have just whined a lot at you, I’m afraid.

I did spend some time the other day working with Springpad, discovering a few things I’d not noticed before, like the social network aspect of it, which is great. But I do have a problem with the layout – I’m not sure it’s going to work for me, but then I am also not sure if it’s customizable, so will do some more playing around.

Hi Nanette – I hope you are feeling better! You are the second person to mention being ill with the flu recently…hope it’s not going around!

Thanks for your comments about the layout! We are currently working on a revamp of the My Stuff and Friends Stuff interfaces, including simplified organization, better filtering and improved searching. In addition, we’re developing a sweet new clipper that’s got superior functionality to the current version that will make customizing the stuff you clip from the web way easier!

These changes will be implemented in the coming weeks, so stay tuned! In the meantime, as you begin playing around with Springpad, definitely continue to send your feedback my way! It’s a huge help!

    Thanks :)

    Hi Devin :)

Now that I do feel better (I, too, hope it’s not going around!), and can think again, let me tell you what my issue with the layout is.

For me, what I need is a workspace, as opposed to social networking area or anything like that (although I think it’s great that that is incorporated in with it). But if I had a wish list – and, of course, I do – what my landing page/layout would look like is something like this:

All my apps there, as soon as I sign in. And my recent files and unfiled . Or, at least a text link to them, listed individually, so that it’s sort of like sitting down at my desk and having my stuff all right there, as I sometimes work with two or three cross connected things at once. Ideally. As it is now, if I sign out from the apps page, when I sign in I’m on that page, but on no page can I find the apps and the files together, so I’ve yet to figure out how to transfer files from here to there, or anywhere.

And um… well, I guess that is my primary wish. I understand that the way it is now may work best for others, so I don’t know if you guys can do sort of module type things, like iGoogle or something, so that people can set it up as best suits them, or what.

Anyway, with all the customizable notebooks and the blogging and the ability (I think?) to tweet what you’ve just noted or blogged or sprung and to make selected things public so that others can comment on them or vote on them or whatever (does all that appear on one main page somewhere, kinda like Digg? Or more like Facebook, just friended pages? Or just your own? All this is probably in some manual or FAQ somewhere, but what fun is there reading those?) ;) I think you have great potential with this idea, whether any of my suggestions are workable or not.

    Hi Nanette,

Thanks for the detailed feedback – this is helpful! We’re developing some improvements to the My Stuff and Friends stuff interfaces to be released in a couple of weeks and would love to include you in a group of Alpha testers to play around with it and submit feedback. Send me an email if you are interested, and I’ll add you to the group :)

One thing I did want to mention that you can do right away relates to how you view your apps and add stuff to them. If you are in My Stuff, there is a skinny blue bar on the left side of the screen that you can click on to reveal all your apps. That menu will remain open until you click on the blue bar again. Now, when you are in My Stuff, you can drag specific items to whatever apps you want to add them to.

To answer your question about sharing: when you make something public, anyone who follows you can see it in their Friends Stuff page, just like when you go to your Friends Stuff page, you see all the public items from the people you follow.

Again, thanks for your feedback and great ideas! And definitely send me an email if you’d like to be included in testing the new improvements we’ve developed…we’d love your input!

Thanks, and glad you are feeling better!

Devin, yay! Thank you so much – that is exactly what I needed! I didn’t even see that little strip there. Now it is almost perfect.

Being an Alpha tester sounds like it would be great fun. I’ll send you an email and express an interest. I really appreciate you and Jeff taking the time to answer all my questions, too.
