random confession: i don’t understand the whole lady gaga thing

If I thought about her at all – which I didn’t really, because until recently I had no idea who she was – it was to notice that, like a number of earlier performers, she uses odd, imaginative costumes and hair styles to stand out. Apparently there is more to her than that, though, because [...]

an uneasy silence

It is so very quiet here. The kids are away. Mom is in bed. And for the first time today there is silence, except for the city noises which always exist. A door slamming, a muted laugh, footsteps on the sidewalk. photo via Sanchovi’s flickr  I am tired, but it seems a shame to waste [...]

random obvious observation

It is far more fun to do something you want to do, rather than something you feel you should do.

strange disconnections

I’d never heard of the actress Brittany Murphy until she died. Now, apparently her husband, Simon Monjack, has died, too, and the only reason I know of him is because he was married to Brittany Murphy. That all just seems so strange. Sorry for the families and all their losses.

so. hb

I posted on Human Beams today… nothing special or particularly notable (even if I am making a note of it), but as it’s the first time I’ve done so since January! I thought I would mark the occasion. Last year or so, when HB was still limping along, I came across a few friends from [...]

That’s why I started these online classes last fall, so that I would learn to be structured a bit, have deadlines to meet and actually get things done.  (graphic from here) So far, that’s working out well, for classes anyway. While grades don’t mean much [...]

e.t. day

The equivalent of little green men (where are the little green women?) have been trooping in and out of my house all day. They pop in through the television set, at my mom’s invitation, spouting stuff about pyramids and Chaco Canyon and creatively named places in Mexico and Central and South America. We did that! [...]

and expecting a different result

I have a mental block, or something. Every time someone points to a vapid, nonsensical article that Robin Givhan has written I Google her name and image, all the while thinking “Oh, please, don’t let this woman be Black!” And, every single time, she is. Sigh. (via)

arizona – the sundown state

I used the wrong analogy in a previous post.  Influenced, I would say, by the extensive – and difficult to overcome – training most Americans receive from birth,  when I sat down to write about the “show me your papers” law recently passed in Arizona I proceeded to lazily stumble onto the same well-worn track [...]
